How to calculate percentages, step by step

Most percentage questions are one of three types. Once you can spot which one you have, each is a single short calculation.

A percentage is a fraction out of 100100. So 15%15\% means 15100\tfrac{15}{100}, or 0.150.15 as a decimal. Turning the percent into a decimal is usually the first move.

Finding a percent of a number

To take a percent of a number, turn the percent into a decimal and multiply. Take 15%15\% of 8080.

WORKED EXAMPLE
15%×8015\% \times 80
1. Write 15%15\% as 0.150.15.
2. Multiply: 0.15×80=120.15 \times 80 = 12.
ANSWER
1212

What percent is one number of another

To find what percent AA is of BB, divide AA by BB and multiply by 100100. Ask what percent 1818 is of 2424.

WORKED EXAMPLE
1824×100\frac{18}{24} \times 100
1. Divide: 18÷24=0.7518 \div 24 = 0.75.
2. Multiply by 100100: 0.75×100=75%0.75 \times 100 = 75\%.

Percent increase and decrease

For a percent change, divide the size of the change by the original amount, then multiply by 100100. A price rising from 4040 to 5050 changes by 1010.

WORKED EXAMPLE
504040×100\frac{50 - 40}{40} \times 100
1. Change over original: 1040=0.25\tfrac{10}{40} = 0.25.
2. Multiply by 100100: a 25%25\% increase.
ANSWER
25%25\%
